Bennett’s Century Not Enough as Zimbabwe Face Innings Defeat

By OnSport Reporter

England’s massive first-innings score of 565/6 declared has left Zimbabwe staring at an innings defeat, despite Brian Bennett’s remarkable century. The 21-year-old’s heroics weren’t enough to save the Chevrons from a mammoth task of chasing down England’s lead.

Bennett accelerated to a century off just 97 balls, striking at an astonishing rate against a formidable England bowling lineup. This marked his second century in Test cricket, following his maiden ton against Afghanistan at Queens Sports Club last year. Bennett’s innings came to an end when he was caught by Ollie Pope off the bowling of Josh Tongue on 139 (143).

Despite Bennett’s efforts, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 265, forcing them to follow-on. At stumps on Day 2, the Chevrons were reeling at 30-2, with Ben Curran and Sean Williams on the crease. Zimbabwe trail England by 270 runs, and it seems unlikely they will be able to avoid an innings defeat.

Zimbabwe will resume Day 3 seeking to wipe away England’s lead and salvage some pride. However, given the significant deficit, it will be a challenging task for the Chevrons to stage a comeback and avoid an embarrassing innings defeat.
