BULAWAYO Chiefs and former Warriors midfielder Kelvin Madzongwe is set to scoop the May Southern Region Soccer League (SRSL)Player of the Month award following an impressive start to the season.

The Amakhosi Amahle skipper’s consistency has seen his side cling to the the top of the log standings as they seek a quick return to the top-flight.

Madzongwe, however, faces stiff competition for the gong from his teammates Panashe ‘Nino’ Shoko and goalkeeper Matripples Muleya.

Hwange’s Mongameli “Smaller” Tshuma is also in the running, as his team is joint top with Chiefs on 19 points and he has been instrumental in their good start.

For the Goalkeeper of the Month award, it’s a battle between Muleya and Hwange’s Peter Mushure, who dislodged the vastly experienced Nedrick Madeya from the first-choice slot and kept a clean sheet in May.

On the other hand, Muleya has conceded one goal in eight matches this season.

Coach Rodwell Dhlakama has collected more points than any other coach in May, with a 100% record, while Bosso 90’s Melusi Sibanda has won three and drawn one, making him a strong contender for the Coach of the Month award.

Eagle Life’s Junior Holand, who has scored five goals this season to lead the scoring chart, is set to walk away with the Top Goalscorer of the Month award.
Godwin Jena of Bulawayo Warriors is on four goals and is another striker who has caught the eye, although he managed only two goals in the month.

The awards are set to be presented during the week nine matches, scheduled for this weekend.

Bulawayo Warriors will kick-start the action this afternoon against the Mthulisi Maphosa-coached Blackrock FC at White City Stadium.

On Saturday, Chiefs host Nkayi United at the Chiefs Village, while Raylton will host the Eagle Life and the Hwange match.

On Sunday, there is a double header at White City, with third-placed Bulawayo City hosting Plumtree side Mainline, and Bosso 90 taking on Imbizo at 3 pm.
