NEARLY 100 golfers have lined up at Kwekwe Sports Club that kicked off this (Saturday) morning and ends tomorrow.

Midlands Province Golf chairman,  Alecs Mawere said a total of 34 golfers are teeing off in the Championship Division while 59 golfers are in the social section.

“We are excited about the number of players that have turned up for the tournament and I believe we are going to have a thrilling event.

“Our playing format is stroke play,” he said.

Mawere said they are hoping to see a number of juniors and amateurs turn professional at the event.

“Remember these (juniors and amateurs) aspire to play professional and competitive golf but they are still at entry level.

“Amateur tournaments to us is like an unavoidable refinery through which one’s competency comes under scrutiny. All other golfers are social players who are there to breathe life to this tournament by offering solidarity and the zeal to our juniors to have the requisite sense of belonging which is necessary for them to play to the best of their potential,” he said.

Mawere said utilising Kwekwe Golf Club assists them in projecting golf as a community centric activity rather than a preserve of a select few.

“It falls within our desire to recruit members in our decentralised clubs. It sits right at the heart of image building and branding in which our presence is felt in every community. We also take these events as an opportunity to attend our course and ancillary infrastructure.”

Last year, Thembelani Vundla walked away the champion at the edition that was held at the Gweru Golf Club.
