Hwange FC suffered a major blow to their title hopes after going down 2-1 to Bosso 90 at White City Stadium in the Southern Region Soccer League yesterday afternoon.
Despite Bosso 90 coach Melusi Sibanda firing warning shots before the game, Chipangano failed to heed the caution and blew a golden opportunity to take the lead by missing a first-half penalty.
The usually reliable Kelly Shiyandindi had his spot kick saved by Romeo Zimba in goals for Bosso 90 after Lucky Nyathi was fouled inside the penalty box by Sipho Ncube.
Tearaway winger Ayanda Mkhwebu scored the opening goal for Bosso towards halftime before Hwange equalised in the second half from yet another penalty. This time around, it was substitute Mongameli Tshuma who took responsibility.
However, it was Bosso 90 who had the last laugh, with Zimba converting another spot kick after Mthabisi Ncube was fouled.
Hwange remained on 20 points, while Bosso 90 continued with their impressive start to the season, climbing up to seventh with 18 points, just two behind third-placed Hwange.
Meanwhile, Bulawayo Chiefs took full advantage of Hwange’s slip-up with a convincing 3-1 victory over Imbizo at the Chiefs Village. Briony Ngwenya, Kimjoe Sibanda, and Tatenda Ushe were on target for Amakhosi Amahle, who are now under the tutelage of John Nyikadzino.
Chiefs now lead the standings by a point, having moved to 23 points.
However, Nkayi are breathing heavily down their necks after posting a 1-0 victory over NUST FC at the NUST Stadium yesterday afternoon. Leroy “Sparta” Ndlovu scored the solitary strike as he continues to rediscover his form that led Arenel Movers to PSL promotion in 2023.
Ajax Hotspurs Movers failed to pay the venue fee, and their match against Blackrock was cancelled. Blackrock are likely to be awarded the maximum points, which would take them joint second with Nkayi on 22 points.
In other matches, Zebra Revolution and Plumtree side Mainlie played out an entertaining 3-all stalemate, with USA-bound midfielder Mayibongwe Ndlovu scoring a brace.
Elsewhere, Bulawayo Warriors carried their fine form from last week, edging Casmyn 1-0 at the White City B-arena.
