The South Africa senior men’s cricket team, the Proteas, arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday for a historic two-match Test series without Test captain Temba Bavuma.

The World Test Championship-winning captain has been ruled out of the series against the Chevrons due to a left hamstring strain.

Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa’s second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord’s Cricket Ground early this month.

He is set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of the injury.

Keshav Maharaj will assume the captaincy as the Proteas wipe off the sweat of an impressive victory at Lord’s to clinch the Test Championship title.

Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne hinted that the Proteas might give new players a run in the series after their touched down at the JMN Airport.
“It’s quite a cool series to be part of. Hopefully, it will bring a lot of positives for Zimbabwe Cricket, but even for us, we have a few new guys, so it will be a good series for both of us,” he said.

Some of the new players include Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, and Codi Yusuf. It will also be interesting to see if the Proteas will give pace bowler Kwena Maphaka a chance.
The youngster impressed at the Under-19 World Cup and has earned a few caps in the senior team.

The first Test starts on June 28 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

South Africa squad: David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Luan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.
