The iconic Victoria Falls will once again play host to one of Africa’s most breath-taking sporting events tomorrow as a record-breaking 5,250 participants prepare to tackle the various distances of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon.
This unprecedented turnout underscores the growing international appeal of a race renowned not only for its competitive spirit but also for its unparalleled scenic beauty.
The marathon, which includes a full 42.195km marathon, a 21.0975km half marathon, a 21km half marathon relay, and an approximately 7km fun run, promises a distance for every level of runner.
One of the organisers of the race, Brent Williamson said 5,250 participants had registered for this years race across the various events.
The marathon routes offer a truly unique experience, taking runners over the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, briefly into Zambia, and providing stunning views of the majestic Mosi-oa-Tunya and the gorges below.
Last year’s edition saw a dominant performance by Zimbabwean athletes, particularly in the men’s full marathon.
Tendai Zimuto clinched the men’s full marathon title in a time of 02:17:14, showcasing the depth of talent within our nation’s long-distance running fraternity.
He was followed by compatriots Trust Tatenda Hove (02:23:25) and John Payarira (02:23:29), who rounded out the top three, making it a clean sweep for Zimbabwe.
In the women’s section, Ethel Pangiso came first followed by Daisy Kipsugut with Fortunate Chidzivo taking the bronze medal.
Beyond the competition, the Victoria Falls Marathon has solidified its reputation as a significant contributor to local tourism and community development.
The influx of runners and their supporters provides a substantial boost to hotels, restaurants, and other businesses in the resort town.
