The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has instituted investigations into allegations that a Yadah official assaulted the team’s goalkeeper following a dramatic 3-2 loss to Ngezi Platinum on Friday.
The PSL initiated the investigations following a complaint from the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ).
FUZ issued a statement condemning the assault on Yadah FC goalkeeper, Godknows Gurure by a member of his own club’s board.
The incident, which occurred in the changing room after Yadah FC’s defeat to Ngezi Platinum Stars, sparked outrage and the football players’ body demanded immediate action from the country’s football authorities.
FUZ described the act of violence as “cowardly” and “utterly unacceptable,” bringing “shame to the game.”
The union emphasised that the changing room should be a safe space for players, and that no footballer should be subjected to physical or verbal abuse by club officials.
FUZ called on the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), and all other relevant authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the matter, hold the perpetrator fully accountable with strong disciplinary action, and enforce new measures to protect the safety and welfare of players across all clubs.
“Footballers are workers who deserve respect, dignity, and protection,” the statement read. “This assault is not only an attack on Godknows Gurure but also an attack on player rights and the values of the sport. We demand swift and decisive action to ensure such disgraceful conduct has no place in Zimbabwean football.”
The identity of Yadah official who assaulted the player is yet to be established.
The PSL indicated they have requested a detailed report from Yadah FC to “establish the facts surrounding this incident”.
The PSL emphasized that the league is taking the matter seriously and that the safety, security, and welfare of players, officials, and all stakeholders are a top priority.
Bare stated that appropriate measures will be taken once the reports have been reviewed and the investigation concluded.
