SRC seeks ZRU executive resignation

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has called for the immediate resignation of the entire Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) national executive board and national executive committee.

The ultimatum is due today Friday, September 5, 2025 and  comes after the SRC said it noted “incessant governance and leadership challenges” that have brought the sport of rugby into “disrepute.”

The letter states that if the ZRU executive fails to comply, it must provide a formal reason as to why the SRC should not invoke its powers under Section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15).

This section gives the SRC the authority to take decisive action against any registered national sports association.

The directive from the SRC comes following the suspension of president, Losson Mtongwiza, and the chairperson for women’s rugby, Regina Mwanandiwa, following public outrage over leaked audio recordings in May.

The recordings allegedly captured Mtongwiza berating female players of the national women’s team, the Lady Sables, and making threats and abusive comments. This incident, combined with allegations of financial mismanagement, led to an internal ZRU investigation, followed by the suspensions.

The squabbles at ZRU come on the backdrop of the historic qualification of the Sables for the 2026 Rugby World Cup. Zimbabwe qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, marking their third appearance in the tournament and ending a 34-year wait since their last participation in 1991. They secured their spot by defeating Namibia 30-28 in the Rugby Africa Cup final held in Kampala, Uganda.
