Highlanders FC are reportedly in discussions with former Manchester City forward, Benjani Mwaruwari with a view to offer him a role in the technical setup.
Sources at the club said there are various options on the table for Mwaruwari to join Highlanders although the club hierarchy is reluctant to offer him the post of head coach.
A meeting between Highlanders officials and the former Warriors captain are set to take place on Monday.
Following a suggestion by club benefactor, Sir Wicknell Chivayo, that Mwaruwari would make a good coach at the Bulawayo giants, there have been discussions on how to bring the former Jomo Cosmos player onboard.
“The club released a statement that was misconstrued as implying they would not be engaging Benjani but in actual fact we have been talking as a club on the best way forward and as the statement said, we follow due processes when hiring coaches and this is simply what we are doing,” said an impeccable source.
A dismal season marked by the relegation dogfight haunted the club this year and many are hoping for changes of fortunes as the club turns 100 next year.
Chivayo has promised to pay Mwaruwari’s salary and give him a car if he is hired by Highlanders.
The businessman gifted Highlanders with $1 million mid this year, which is being released in tranches of $250 000 and so far, he has released $500 000.
While some in the Highlanders family feel Mwaruwari is being imposed on the club there is a section that believes Benjani will bring value to the club through his links with English football particularly his former club, Manchester City.
They believe Highlanders can benefit from associating with Benjani and establish links that will outlive his tenure at Bosso and open avenues for various areas of cooperation with the English club.
While his coaching CV is thin, paired with astute assistants, some believe he can pick Bosso up from the doldrums.
