FORMER Warriors captain, Benjani Mwaruwari has called for equal funding opportunities for women football.
Mwaruwari believes without such support the women’s game will struggle to rise.
He said while male football was getting sponsorship it was a sad situation for the women.
The Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League has no prize money or grants for the teams.
“I think women football is now a critical part of the game and in other countries, more resources are being channelled to them but as a country we are lagging behind.
“I urge corporates to come on-board and support the ladies game to ensure it rises,” said Mwaruwari.
“I hope sponsors will be able to equal what they are giving to men and also give to women.”
He revealed he got a call from Zifa Southern Region Women champions, Lobengula City Queens seeking assistance to meet various obligations.

Queens’ director, Sibekiwe Ndlovu said Mwaruwari has always come through for the club, paying part of their affiliation fees and recently assisting with championship t-shirts.
The club was crowned yesterday with former Mighty Warriors star, Precious “Gringo” Mpala, who is coaching Queens, being crowned coach of the year.
Loxion Vipers’ Praise Neshiri received the top goal scorer’s award after netting 18 goals this past season.
Musawenkosi Mpofu of Lobengula City Queens was crowned Goalkeeper of the Year after conceding four goals.
Vice Chairperson, Catherine Mavada said they are happy with hownthe season progressed and ended and are looking forward to another exciting season next year.
