Former Highlanders midfielder Mayibongwe Ndlovu has left the country for the United States of America to further his studies at Coker University after being awarded a scholarship.

Ndlovu, who played for Zebra Revolution last year and scored six goals, received the scholarship through Vision2Africa, an initiative spearheaded by Nyasha Dube, son of former Hwange coach Nation Dube and Salifyagi Mugala.

A former head boy at Mpopoma High School where he excelled academically, Ndlovu played for the Highlanders senior team during the 2024 season. He was registered as one of the club’s five Under-20 players but saw limited game time.

Speaking to OnSport Magazine from his base in South Carolina, Ndlovu confirmed he will be studying at Coker University but has yet to decide on his specific program. He added that he will continue his football career.

“I’m excited to have gotten the opportunity to further my studies at this institution. I’m grateful to everyone that made it possible for me to be here. There are so many possibilities, and I will be deciding on which program I will do, but I will definitely continue with my football career,” said Ndlovu.

The sturdy midfielder joins a list of players such as Mkhokheli Dube, Thubelihle Nkomazana, and Nyasha Dube, who have all received scholarships to study in the US.

Ndlovu also previously played for Bosso 90, having joined the team from Bulawayo City where he was mentored by Bruce Tshuma. He was spotted at the Vision2Africa trials held in Harare, where he impressed scouts.

Endowed with a cultured left foot, Ndlovu is a skillful and intelligent player who can operate on the wing or behind the strikers. He is also good at taking set pieces.

According to the South Carolina Independent, Coker University is a student-focused, comprehensive institution of higher education with a strong liberal arts core, located in Hartsville, South Carolina. Coker combines round table, discussion-based learning with hands-on experiences to encourage active participation in and out of the classroom.

Founded in 1908, Coker is a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree-granting institution and competes in 22 NCAA Division II sports. Coker is included among the “Best Colleges” in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review, and by Washington Monthly as a “Best Bang for Your Buck” college in the southeast.
