AS fading giants Dynamos continue singing the blues, wallowing deep in the relegation zone, former coach Tonderai Ndiraya has decried the Glamour Boys’ situation saying the country’s traditional giants should remain in the top league to inspire new teams.
Dynamos suffered their ninth defeat of the season, losing 0-1 to Simba Bhora at Wadzanai Stadium on Saturday; they have only won two games in 20 matches, sitting precariously on position 17 on the log table with 15 points.
They are just six points above bottom-placed Kwekwe United, trailing 16th placed Triangle by five points.
Ndiraya has bemoaned DeMbare’s current status in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, saying Dynamos, Caps United and Highlanders should not be relegated from the top league.
“It’s sad to see where Dynamos are at the moment, it’s very sad. I hope those running the club will do something to help it survive. I don’t know if they will need miracles, but surely something must be done. There is no local football without mentioning Dynamos. They are an important club in this league and a founding member of the Premier Soccer League. If they are relegated, it will be a very sad day for our football,” Ndiraya said.
The club has come under fire from its supporters as it has reached its lowest ebb in the history of Zimbabwe’s football under the ownership of Bernard Marriot Lusengo,
Ndiraya said the league needs Dynamos, adding other giants Caps United and Highlanders in his assertion.
“For our league to be strong, we need Dynamos, Highlanders and Caps United. These are the founding members of the league and we want them to remain there to motivate all the new teams coming in. They are the traditional giants of the league,” he said.
Dynamos fans will remember 20 years ago in 2005 when their side survived relegation on the last day when they edged Masvingo United at Mucheke Stadium with a late goal by Elliot Matsika when the dreaded chop was imminent.
Dynamos last won the league title in 2014 while for Caps United it was in 2016 after Chicken Inn in 2015.
It’s even worse for Highlanders who last lifted the silverware in 2006.
The league has continued to belong to relatively new teams with FC Platinum dominating from 2017 to 2022, ceding it to Ngezi Platinum Stars in 2023 and the latter surrendered it to Simba Bhora last year.
With 21 games to each side this year, Highlanders are in position eight with 27 points, Caps United are on position 10 with 25 points while Dynamos are second from the bottom with 15 points from 20 games and likely to lose their abandoned tie against FC Platinum.
Simba Bhora, were promoted to the top league in 2023 and won title the following year and lead the pack this season with 43 points while debutantes MWOS are on the second spot with 40 points while other newbies Scottland FC are on the third spot with 34 points, signaling a change in the football landscape in the country.
