Former Emakhandeni Pirates captain Pride “Scara” Mzamba is seeking to restore his career, which made him a household name in lower-division football, at Nkayi United.
The striker, who captained Emakhandeni in their maiden season in the Southern Region Division One League in 2022, was in Botswana for the past two years, playing in an unofficial league.
However, he decided to pack his bags and return home, where he joined promotion-chasing Nkayi United. “It feels good to be back home. My mind is now settled, and I just want to perform at my best, help my team, and finish in a good position,” said the 25 year-old Mzamba.
Mzamba, who scored eight goals in the 2022 season, has found the going tough at Nkayi. Competing for a place upfront with the likes of James Chivasa, Brendon Dube, Tino Chitete, Michael Ndlovu, amongst other youngsters has made it difficult for him to showcase his talent.
But he believes he will one day prove his worth. “I am working hard. I know that my chance will come and I will grab it with both hands. It’s just a matter of time. Even at training, I am getting it right, that’s why I believe that I will rediscover my form.”
Mzamba’s task has been made more difficult by the club’s acquisition of forwards Ben Smith and Ronald Kaunda, who was almost signed by Highlanders during the mid-season break. The duo were playing in the Botswana Premier League.
Daniel Ndlovu and his technical team have assembled a strong squad that is currently joint-top with Hwange and Bulawayo Chiefs in the Southern Region Division One.
Mzamba was teammates with Mbonisi Ncube, who is making waves at Gwanda Pirates after being offloaded by Bosso and is already on three goals for his side in two matches.
Other players that were part of the crack Emakhandeni side that won the ZIFA Bulawayo Province Division Two title in 2019 include Chitete, Mthabisi Sibanda (now at Bulawayo Warriors), and John Sibanda, who is also plying his trade in Botswana.
Nkayi takes on Vic Falls City Herentals on Saturday afternoon at White City Stadium.
