The Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League has introduced monthly awards as part of efforts to motivate the players.
In partnership with Luisa Enterprises, the league will be awarding the top goal scorer and player of the month with $100 each.
ZWPSL chairperson, Chido Chizondo said rewarding players is part of their efforts to celebrate female footballers.
“We need to celebrate the players more and I believe these awards will go a long way towards providing motivation for the players,” she said.
Luisa Enterprises, makers of Utano Herbal products, sponsors the awards and the company’s director, Engineer Lazarus Duri said it was important for corporates to come on board and help the women’s game grow.
He said having already made strides in funding junior football development in Chitungwiza, he felt compelled to also lend a hand in the women’s game.
“The women’s game is growing in popularity and I think companies should also assist them as they do with the men’s section of the game.
“For girls to excel they need to be rewarded and motivated,” said Duri.

Chizondo, whose executive came into office in July, expressed gratitude to Duri for funding the awards saying they are engaging more corporate partners to come aboard and revitalise the women’s game.
The inaugural awards for the month of August were won by Michelle Mazhambe of Shesham Queens, who scored four goals to clinch the top goal scorer of the month and Anita Ncube of Kwekwe Queens who was adjudged the player of the month.
The players were presented with the cash rewards over the weekend together with shields.
Ncube said the awards will motivate the players in the league to improve as they would all want to clinch them.
