ZC Terminates Sean Williams Contract

By OnSport Reporter

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has terminated the national contract of Sean Williams (39), effective 31 December 2025. The decision comes after the player made himself unavailable for national selection, most recently withdrawing on the eve of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier.

ZC noted that this withdrawal occurred amid potential anti-doping testing, raising immediate concerns.

An internal investigation was launched to understand Williams’ repeated unavailability. During this process, the player disclosed that he has been struggling with a drug addiction and has voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility. While ZC commended him for seeking help, the circumstances of his withdrawal prompted a review of his conduct.

The board stated that a review of Williams’ record revealed “a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability, which has impacted team preparations and performance.” While acknowledging his decision to seek rehab, ZC concluded that his actions were not tenable, stating his withdrawal “raises serious concerns regarding professional and ethical standards.” Consequently, he will no longer be considered for national selection.

Despite the termination, ZC sincerely acknowledged and appreciated Williams’ immense contribution to Zimbabwean cricket over the past two decades. The board recognised his pivotal role in significant moments in the team’s recent history, stating he leaves a lasting legacy. ZC concluded by wishing him strength in his recovery and success in his future endeavours.

In his international career, Williams made his ODI debut in February 2005, and has represented Zimbabwe in over 160 ODIs and 80 T20Is. He made his Test debut in 2013 and has played over 15 Test matches.

He is known for his aggressive batting style and he has scored 5 centuries and 4 half-centuries in Test cricket, with an average of over 40.

As a bowler, he is known for his slow left-arm orthodox spin. He has taken over 80 wickets in ODIs and over 40 wickets in T20Is.

Other achievements include the year 2019, when he was named the captain of the Zimbabwean cricket team and has led them in various tournaments. He has also represented the country in the Cricket World Cup.

He is the current holder of the longest international career record in men’s cricket (almost 21 years).
