As Zimbabwean football still cherishes the memories of midfield dynamo Carrington Gomba, his son Hamilton is emerging from his father’s shadow, determined to create his own path and inscribe his name in the historic echelons of football.
At 22, the speed merchant is hungry to scale dizzy heights. Interestingly, both Gombas are now on the Southern Region Soccer League side Megawatt FC’s books, with Carrington serving as team manager
Hamilton, unlike his father, is a speedy forward who keeps defenders on their toes and uses his physique to bulldoze. He scored five goals combined with two assists to help his team finish eighth in the 2025 season. He has already donned the iconic Hwange jersey and the blue and white of Harare giants Dynamos like his father.
OnSport Magazine (OM) sat down with Hamilton (HG) to discuss legacy, ambition, and his journey so far.
OM: Hamilton, thank you for speaking with us. Let’s start with your roots. Tell us about where you’re from.
HG: I was born in Hwange on the 27th of September 2003. I went to Lwendulu United School, then Gebhuza, Marist Brothers and Prince Edwards in Harare. I grew up there, playing football in the local streets, which is where I really developed my passion for the game. I come from a loving family of four. I’m the firstborn, with parents who have always supported my interest in sports.
OM: When did you realize football was your talent?
HG: I discovered my talent at around age 8, playing in local tournaments. My natural ability and dedication quickly caught the attention of coaches.
OM: Who helped nurture that early talent?
HG: My primary school coach, Mr. V. Kamocha, played a huge role. He provided guidance, training, and opportunities to play in competitive matches. That foundation was crucial.
OM: And who inspired you to dream big?
HG: My inspiration came from watching professional football and admiring the skills of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané. Seeing them succeed motivated me to work hard. But my biggest influence is my family, especially my parents, who have supported me financially and emotionally throughout my entire journey.
OM: Speaking of family, you carry a famous name in Zimbabwean football. Is there any pressure being the son of a legend like Carrington Gomba?
HG: (Laughs) There’s no pressure, only a drive to keep the Gomba name growing, fueled by my own love for football. Growing up in that environment sets a benchmark—you naturally want to surpass what he achieved.
OM: How would you describe your relationship with your dad now, especially working together at Megawatt?
HG: We have a very understanding relationship. He is always trying to help me become a better footballer, and it’s a loving, supportive dynamic. It’s a blessing to have that guidance so close.
OM: Let’s trace your career path. Which teams have you played for?
HG: I started with a local youth team in Hwange, then played for Prince Edward Academy. From there, I joined Dynamos, starting in Division 2 before graduating to the first team. I’ve also played for Hwange FC, and I’m currently with Megawatt FC.
OM: You’ve already had some notable achievements.
HG: Yes, I’ve been fortunate. I won the national championship with the Prince Edward U17 team, was second top goal scorer at the U17 NASH finals, and have scored some crucial goals in important matches. I also reached the Chibuku Cup semifinals with Dynamos, which was a great experience.
OM: What has been your single most memorable moment on the pitch so far?
HG: Without a doubt, scoring a last-minute winning goal in a U17 tournament match against Dewure. Seeing my team progress to the semifinals and hearing the roar of the fans—it was an unforgettable feeling.
OM: If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be doing?
HG: I would have loved to be a sports coach or a Physical Education teacher. I want to give back to the community and help inspire the next generation.
OM: Who are your favourite players and teams?
HG: Locally, I admire Rodwell Chinyengetere, Walter Musona, and Godknows Murwira. Foreign players, it’s Sadio Mané and Kylian Mbappé—I love their skill, work ethic, and speed. For teams: Dynamos and Mwos locally. Internationally, I love Liverpool for their speed, Orlando Pirates, and Real Madrid.
OM: Off the field, what motivates you and how do you relax?
HG: I’m motivated by the love of the game, my family’s support, and a desire to make a positive impact in my community. To relax, I enjoy good food—my favourites are garlic and rosemary smashed potatoes with chicken stew, and sadza with okra. I listen to a lot of Afrobeats and Gospel music; my favourite artists are Willis and Elevation Worship.
OM: Looking to the future, what is your biggest ambition?
HG: My ambition is to win major international trophies with both my club and the national team. I also want to use my platform to support youth development programs in Zimbabwe.
OM: Finally, what’s your advice for budding footballers?
HG: “Believe in yourself, work hard, and never give up on your dreams. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you, and always look for ways to improve your game.”
OM: Thank you for your time Hamilton. All the best in your career.
HG: Thanks bhudas (brother).
